Opened last night by the Prime Minister with plenty of fanfare the New Zealand Police have opened a joint “mobility innovation lab” in Newtown, Wellington. In what appears to be a customer success deal, the centre contains a secure 2/3/4G network and an office style that encourages flexible working. Work between Vodafone and the Police will kick off in the centre in the early new year. Nice to see us keeping something in Wellington for once.
Vodafone and NZ Police open Mobility Innovation Lab
Vodafone New Zealand, with the support of the NZ Police, have today opened the Mobility Innovation Lab and Experience Centre in Wellington.
The Centre is part of the second phase of a successful Policing Excellence programme in which Vodafone has worked alongside the Police to introduce mobile technology and systems across their workforce over the past two years.
The Centre, located at a Vodafone building in Newtown, will provide an environment that fosters innovation, collaboration and encourages rapid deployment of ideas and tools that support day-to-day operational policing. To support this, the space has been designed with:
- A fully-contained 2/3/4G network within the centre where teams can develop and test mobility ideas securely in a live environment
- State-of-the-art VC capability to facilitate dialogue with other Police and Vodafone locations, partners and businesses – here and abroad
- Dedicated public WiFi
- An open-plan, modern, wireless workspace that encourages flexible working
As well as Vodafone and Police teams, the Centre brings together key local and global partners such as Nokia (Finland), Airpoint (UK), Smudge (NZ) Intergraph (NZ/US) and BroadSoft (US). These partners will work together to develop new initiatives, with the opportunity for other partners to participate in the future.
Vodafone’s Chief Executive Officer, Russell Stanners, said the company was excited about this next phase of the relationship.
“The potential for further mobility on the front line is huge so by bringing together Vodafone, the Police and our partners we can really start to break barriers and create new mobility opportunities.
Other government agencies, as well as local and international businesses will also be invited to participate at the centre and share the outcomes and solutions that are developed.
“It’s predicted that mobile app development in Enterprise will more than double next year.”*

Vodafone, NZ Police and the partners will commence work at the Centre early in the new year.

Vodafone Partnership with NZ Police
